I saw this book all over social media and lo and behold, I was able to snag a copy as an ARC!
This is a very unique novel in terms of worldbuilding and plot. The world and its magic system are very detailed, creating a rich, immersive experience for readers. Wang is very skilled in packing a lot of information without bogging down the pace. I enjoyed the dual perspectives; they complemented each other and led to some amazing revelations.
I really liked Sciona. She is a fiery character and her quips/barbs were very satisfying. Her intelligence belies her trusting nature, making it easy for her to be manipulated. But my favourite part was seeing Sciona interact with Thomil and change as a result. When she realizes her own prejudices, she ACTUALLY STRIVES TO CHANGE!!!
Thomil is another great character. He has a gentle manner but he forces Sciona to see the truth, which makes him quite powerful. He was the perfect balance to Sciona. His complexity drew me to him, and he became a favourite of mine.
The plot is excellent in pacing and twists. I could not have anticipated the ending – and it was devastating.
If you haven’t read this book yet, you should. It’s masterfully done and deserves all the praise.
