I received an advanced copy of this novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I’ve been ignoring my stack of books in lieu of spending more time with my family. It’s been a surprisingly pleasant time with them, and I’ve decided to indulge in baking and watching corny movies all weekend. But now I need to get back to my world of books and make sure I get these reviews out in time for the book release date!
Thomas Huston is a bestselling author and a much-loved professor in the small Pennsylvania town he lives in with his family. When his wife and children are found brutally murdered in their home, the public is shocked. And when Huston is heard to have run away, suspicion falls right on him. Sergeant Ryan DeMarco can’t believe that the man he considered his friend is capable of such a crime. In order to figure out what the motive could be, DeMarco delves into the professor’s life – including his notes on his novel-in-progress. Soon, DeMarco is left to wonder if he ever knew Huston as well as he had thought.
This novel piqued my interest at the very beginning with its eloquent prose and its interesting premise. However, when DeMarco began investigating, I slowly started to lose interest. While the characters that were introduced served a purpose, they didn’t really have much too them, and they started to blend together in my mind. I kept pushing through because I really wanted to know who was behind the murders and why they had done it. The ending wasn’t really a thriller and there was no grand shocking reveal, so I didn’t get that great ending I was hoping for. This novel was well-paced and well-written but was missing that much-needed spark to keep it going strong all the way through!
Happy reading ~
