This novel was given to me as an advanced copy by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Saying that I love science would be an understatement. I have always been fascinated with the different tenets that fall under this broad category, so much so that I went into Life Sciences for my undergraduate degree. When I get a chance to read a novel that looks at the historical rise of leading scientists, it makes me super excited! I was so glad to get the chance to read this novel so here is my review:
In 1896, there is only one woman studying physics at an elite school in Zurich: Mileva Maric. She has overcome much adversity and sexism in order to be at this school and Mileva is determined to use this chance to enlighten herself in this area of theoretical science. Reserved by nature, she seeks friendship in textbooks rather than in her classmates. But that all changes when she meets Albert Einstein, who claims to be head over heels in love with her. Through his courtship, Mileva sees a future for herself with a man who promises to make her his equal in love and science. But as Albert’s fame and success takes him on an upward trajectory, Mileva begins to worry that she will forever be cast in his shadow and never be recognized for who she really is – a genius in her own right.
Now, I don’t know how much of the story is true. I don’t know if Mileva was really treated as badly as she is by Albert. I don’t know how much of her contributions actually went into Einstein’s work. What I do know is that this story is well-written and portrays the struggles of women in science in an apt manner. The story itself pulls you in, and the changes in the relationship of Albert and Mileva is interesting to view. This is not a story for those who like in-depth scientific theory; the author does not go into a great deal of detail regarding scientific breakthroughs and the thought process behind them. But that doesn’t mean that this novel isn’t good. It is meant to portray a hidden side to the life of Albert Einstein and bring his wife to the forefront. And this novel does a fantastic job with that! The Other Einstein comes out in October and I strongly urge all those who want to learn a little more about the famous Albert Einstein to check it out. Who knows, you may be surprised by what you find!
Happy reading ~
