The summary I read about this book didn’t strike me as that great at first. In fact, I borrowed it on a whim. After reading it, I’m so glad I chose to read this book. I don’t think my review can do it justice because it is so complex but here I go!
The novel begins with a boy (whose name we never discover) who stumbles upon a dead body in his family’s car. As his father deals with the police, the boy is taken away from the scene by a girl named Lettie Hempstock. From the beginning, it is clear that Lettie is no ordinary girl. However, the boy finds himself comforted by her and her mother and grandmother. When Lettie has an errand to run, the boy tags along. This decision changes his life forever for he now discovers the presence of magic in his world, both good and bad. And when evil threatens to destroy his life, he must rely on Lettie and her family to save him.
This book reminded me a lot of A Wrinkle in Time but I felt like it was much better written. Both a child and an adult could read and enjoy this, which is definitely a talent! It was simple and complex all at the same time. Although the magical elements were not described in great detail, there was no need for that. The story plot was intense and the themes were very complex and deep. I can’t wait to check out more by this author! Put this book on your summer reading list because it is worth it!!!!!!!
Happy reading ~
