I am having a very difficult time trying to figure out how to write this review. This novel is definitely unusual in that it is narrated about events that happened in the past. Basically, you are reading someone’s autobiography. Except that this person is fictional. And their adventures are all steeped in fantasy. Which makes it FASCINATING. But you see my predicament … how do I give a summary of what this book is about when the point of the story is just to read about the character’s adventures and life? So, I’ve decided to give a very brief idea about this novel and then I will just jump into my opinion of it.
Through a riveting first-person narrative, we see the life of Kvothe, a young man who is surrounded by legends but whom no one truly knows. From his childhood in a troupe of travelling players to his time in a crime-ridden city, we see Kvothe the man emerge from the shadows and become a wizard that shall surpass all others.
This novel hooked me from the start. Kvothe is an intense character with many unique elements. Reading about his prowess for knowledge, his quick wit, and his extraordinary willpower, all I could feel was awe. The story sucks you in; I truly felt as if I was in an inn, listening to Kvothe narrate the story of his life. Every emotion is felt, every achievement brings a sense of accomplishment to the reader. This novel kept me engaged throughout. Every character introduced perfectly highlights one aspect of Kvothe. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones, then I think you would really enjoy this novel. It has just the right amount of violence and fantasy to get you interested and the array of characters will keep you intrigued. I cannot WAIT to get my hand on the next novel in this series!
Happy reading ~
