The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

I first encountered this novel in Indigo. It was just there on a shelf, not on the recommended list, nothing on it to make it seem special. But something about the cover and the title grabbed me and on a whim, I decided to buy it. Little did I know that it would be the best decision I would ever make!

This book is told from the perspective of a nameless girl whose father was once a professor of history. Motherless, her father has been everything for her and has always encouraged her love of discovery and books. One day, she chanced upon a strange book with a woodcut dragon in the center and a series of correspondences in her father’s library. When she confronts him about it, her father reluctantly divulges to her his adventures to discover the mystery surrounding Vlad Tepes, or (as we know him) Count Dracula.

This book is not your ordinary vampire story. In fact, there is very little blood involved. But it is Gothic and eerie and historical. The imagery in this book is so powerful that it will send shivers up your spine and give you goosebumps. After 3 years, the story is still ingrained in my mind and I never resist an opportunity to reread this. This book changes everything when it comes to vampires and you will never again be satisfied with “normal” vampire novels. Read this novel; I promise you will not regret it!

Happy reading ~
