I really need to move on to a new genre of books! I promise that the next book review I write will not be about anything dark or disturbing.
Paul Lohman and his wife Claire are meeting Paul’s brother, Serge, and his wife Babette at a restaurant. Although all pretenses make it seem like this is simply a friendly dinner between family members, it is so much more. They have all been brought together because of an unfortunate circumstance that involves their sons. As the evening progresses, Paul delves into the past to reveal the events that have led up to this night – and the consequences they will have in the future.
The character of Paul is really interesting. I can confidently say that I have never encountered a character like him before. He is unique and borderline eccentric. The way the story is described is captivating in that you get sucked in right away. I enjoyed the experience of piecing together the different memories into a cohesive story and as the book reached closer and closer to the end, I was more and more shocked with the path it was taking. Even now, I feel quite shaken over the ending (which doesn’t mean it was bad or anything). After all of the misses I’ve had with this genre, I’m pleased to say that this wasn’t one of them. If you liked Gillian Flynn, you will love this novel!
