The Best Friend by Shalini Boland

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing me with an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review!

When I find an author whose work I like, I try to read more books by them, even if they aren’t part of a series. In a way, I want to see if it was just that specific book that got to me or if I actually love the style of the author. When it’s the latter, well, then I’m pretty much a lifelong fan and will read anything by them! I am so excited to have been contacted by the author to read her latest book so here is my review:

When Louisa’s son starts at a new posh school, she’s worried about whether she will fit in with the rest of the community. When she meets Darcy, whose son is in the same grade as her own, they strike a fast friendship. Within the span of a few days, they’ve become close friends and have become increasingly influential in each other’s lives. At first, Louisa is happy and can’t believe her luck! Darcy has a fantastic home and is definitely loaded and is perfect in every way. But she also has a dark secret. And as Louisa finds her life entangled in that of Darcy’s, she realizes that her own life – and that of her family – might be in danger.

While I liked the first novel I read by this author better (check my review on The Girl from the Sea), this was still a very good thriller. I liked the setup of the story and I liked how it was interspersed with things in the past. It was terrifying how quickly things soured for Louisa and I was genuinely afraid for her life and safety, and had no idea how she would manage to save herself. This novel was intense and I could not put it down when I started. I actually enjoyed the ending for this thriller a lot, as I felt it showed real character development. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author, and if you haven’t already put her on your list of authors to watch out for, then you should do so now! This is a thriller that is bound to satisfy!

Happy reading ~
