Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

Melinda Sordino is a freshman at her high school and is having the worst time. She is a social pariah and has no friends. She eats alone, she sits alone, she IS alone. Everyone holds a grudge against her because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the police. But what happened that night to cause her to do such a thing is a secret she has told no one. And when she reveals it, it will change everything.

I absolutely loved this novel. I’ve read it countless times and yet, it still brings out so many emotions in me. It’s written in the voice of a troubled teenager – sarcastic, witty, and sad. But what really makes this book amazing is the way you can connect with the main character. You don’t need to go through the struggle she went through to understand how she is feeling. The bullying is not overly dramatic but it is definitely not something we can brush off. It brings to the forefront some of the major issues that surround bullying – why does it occur? what can cause people to turn on someone? and most importantly, how does someone recover from it? Melinda’s story will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it may even make you feel horrified by how people treat her. This book is a must-read and I recommend that everyone in all walks of life read this book. Maybe the reason I’m such a strong advocate for this novel is because I was bullied when I was in school. But I honestly do think that it is a great read and people should give it a chance.

SO GO READ IT! NOW!

Happy reading ~
