Queen of the Tearling

This is one of those new novels that I’ve been seeing constantly in circulation in the library, constantly tempting me to read it even though I really don’t have the time. Now that I have reading week, I’m taking the weekend to get through as many of my books as possible and this one was on the top of my list.

Kelsea has grown up in seclusion, raised by Barty and Carlin. All her life she has known that she is heir to the Tearling throne, which her mother had commanded. She also knows that since her mother’s death, she has been hunted by her uncle, the Regent, and the Red Queen of Mortmesne. When her nineteenth birthday arrives, the Queen’s Guard comes to collect her and place her on the throne. Kelsea must now set her kingdom right and get rid of all the evil practices, including the lottery through which her citizens are shipped off to Mortmesne as slaves. However, many doubt her ability to lead, especially after the atrocious reign of her mother and her uncle. Will she be able to show everyone that she is a True Queen?

It has been a long time since I have read a fantasy/historical novel that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. There were no holes in the storyline, and the magical aspects worked beautifully. The hints towards a past that is similar to our present world was a nice touch that intrigued me a lot. What made me even happier was that the heroine was not some girl known for her beauty. Actually, her character seemed to resemble Elizabeth I (at least, that’s what I think)! The plot was great, the magic was awesome, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Happy reading ~
