Hollow City by Ransom Riggs – Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children #2

I bought this book almost as soon as it was released. And then it stayed on my shelf. Every time, I promised myself I would read it…. but then something else would come up and I would get caught up in that instead. I finally decided to motivate myself to read this book and finish the series altogether, since I really did love the first novel! To motivate myself, I entered into a challenge with my boyfriend to see who would be done the entire series first. So far… I’m winning!

For 10 peculiar children, September 3, 1940 marks the day when they lost their home and all of their belongings, and came face to face with an army of deadly monsters. While they managed to escape, they know that they are still in danger – and the only person who can help them is Miss Peregrine, who is currently trapped in the body of a bird. In search of someone who can cure their beloved ymbryne, Jacob and his friends travel to London. But this war-torn city holds hideous surprises around every corner, making their journey even more treacherous.

The beginning of this novel was a little hard to get through. The first two chapters dragged on for a bit, but I pushed through, and I’m glad I did! The rest of the novel quickly picked up pace and kept me entertained. I loved reading about this expanding world of peculiars, with all of their different loops and mannerisms. These encounters could have used some depth, and might have made a more lasting impression if they had, but it was fun nevertheless. I liked how historical events were interwoven throughout the story, and watching the children grow up was also interesting to see. I didn’t feel like the love angle between Jacob and Emma was that strong, but considering the amount of action going on, I can forgive that. Overall, a pretty good sequel, with a great twist at the end that is making me want to read the final book in the series!

Happy reading ~
