I vaguely remember reading some books by this author. She was a very popular fantasy writer for preteens and I remember all of my friends buying her books. Imagine my surprise when I found out she is now writing adult fiction novels! I was browsing the shelves at my local library and I just picked this up and read a few pages. I wanted to borrow it but I didn’t have my library card with me. When I returned to the library, the book was gone and I had to put myself on the hold list. Either way, I finally got my hands on the book and finished it!
Rebekkah has always been close with her grandmother, Maylene. She has fond memories of her odd eccentricities and the special ritual Maylene would do at every funeral. When Maylene passes away, Rebekkah is devastated and rushes back to the hometown she left behind. But everything is not alright in Claysville. Something evil, something dead is lurking in the town, killing and causing mayhem. It is up to Rebekkah to discover the mystery behind Claysville and find a way to make the dead stay dead – before the dead come to get her.
This book was very very disappointing. The magical part was only here in bits and pieces. Most of the novel revolved around the love story between the two main characters, which was quite boring in itself. It almost felt like if the author had just taken the storyline a hit further, it could have been quite good. I enjoyed the perspectives of the minor characters more than the major characters, which isn’t really a good sign. All in all, I think I’m going to have to declare this book a miss.
Happy reading ~
