Everyone’s heard of Stephen King and everyone knows the story of Carrie. Well, I didn’t. So I decided it was high time that I read this novel.
Carrie is about a girl who is a social outcast and tormented by all of the girls in her school. Her home matters are no better what with her mother being a radical Christian. An incident at school causes Carrie to lose control and she discovers that she has a special power – telekinesis. As she struggles to fit in, please her mother, and discover her new found talent, Carrie finds herself facing a dramatic confrontation during the prom.
This book was horrific, explicit, and terrific all at once. It was gory and I can completely understand why it is banned from most schools. The intensity of the bullying that leads to the culmination of the events portrayed in this novel are unimaginably terrible but that just makes this novel better. It is told in part through newspaper articles, journals, interviews, which makes it all the more interesting.
I watched the 1976 film because I heard it was better than the 2013 remake. It was pretty good but it had quite a bit of embellishment and deviated from the story in quite a few places. Skipping the movie wouldn’t be such a bad thing but that isn’t to say that it was a horrible movie.
Whether you watch the movie or not, I hope you will at least read the book! But it is definitely not for the faint of heart!
Happy reading ~
