I’m back to one of my personal favorite genres of all time – fantasy – and let me just say that ever since I read the premise of this novel, I have been anxious to get my hands on a copy of this book. When I finally got it, I literally dove right in and did not stop for anyone or anything. Before I jump into telling you how amazing this novel is and why you should read it, let me give you a short blurb on what it’s about.
Patricia Delfine and Laurence Armistead are very different when it comes to their views about the world. Patricia loves adventure and magic while Laurence feels truly himself only in the realm of science. But they are both misfits in school, and this is what brings them together and leads to the most unique friendship in the world. However, a series of events leads them to go their separate ways and lose touch in the process. As adults in San Francisco, they never thought they would run into each other. But they do and it is during a time when the world is falling apart all around them. Laurence is an engineering genius, working with a team of eccentric scientists to try to avert catastrophic climate change through technological advancements. Patricia is a graduate from a reputable wizarding school and works with her teachers and peers to use her magic to protect the environment from the damage of humans. They have no idea that there is a bigger scheme at play that will pit Laurence and Patricia against each other – and only one can come out of this victorious. But will victory be gained at the cost of losing the world as we know it?
First off, what a unique plot! The meshing of magic and science in a modern setting was so interesting to read, and the author highlighted so many other issues during the process, like climate change and bullying and love. The story is whimsical, the characters are whimsical, and somehow everything falls into place as it should. I can see how it may be a bit much for some people, and in some places the novel didn’t seem to hold up as well as in other parts, but overall, it was an engaging read that I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for something different. I can honestly gush about this novel all day but that would be boring and repetitive so do yourself a favor and give this novel a try. Be prepared to embrace the weirdness and have fun with Patricia and Laurence!
Happy reading ~
