A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

I’ve had my eye on this book for a while. It’s been on various reading lists and has got quite a bit of praise. I used to be a big fan of fantasy novels at one point but it’s been a while since I’ve read one so I thought this book would be the perfect opportunity to revisit that genre.

Diana is a descendant from 2 lines of great witches. But when her parents passed away, the 7 year old Diana decided to never use magic. She has worked hard to further her career without her powers and has become an accomplished scholar in the study of alchemy. But one day, Diana encounters Ashmole 782, a manuscript laced in magic, Diana cannot resist the urge to open it. As soon as she touches it, she can sense the magic flowing all around her. Realizing that this goes against everything she believes in, she shuts the book and returns it to the shelves in the hopes that nothing was noticed. However, this incident catches the attention of all magical creatures. Now, witches, daemons, and vampires are making contact with her in order to get the book. Diana is inextricably caught up in this battle for the book that may contain information on the origin – and destruction – of all magical creatures. Whose side should she be on? And more importantly, how is she connected to Ashmole 782?

This book was quite disappointing. I kept waiting for the storyline to pick up (which only happened near the end). Most of the story was about love and choosing your right person regardless of the law. There was also a LOT about wine and food…more than I cared for to be honest. It was really unnecessary and there were many times when I wanted to put the book down and give up on it. However, the actual story was good. I’m going to try to read the next book in the series in the hopes that it will continue the great storyline and not have so much unnecessary drivel.

Happy reading ~
