I decided to take a foray into the land of science fiction this time and of course that meant choosing the newest prize winning book I could find! After hearing a lot of things about how revolutionary and amazing this novel was, I simply had to try it.
This novel starts off with expedition 12 making their way into Area X, an isolated area that has been cut off from civilization. The expedition is comprised of a biologist, a psychologist, a surveyor, and an anthropologist, all of them women. After quite a few botched expeditions, there is high hopes that this one will discover new information about Area X. As soon as the four women reach their destination, they spy a spiral staircase leading into the ground. When they decide to journey down into its depths, they find some mysterious writings on the walls – and maybe something else that should never have been disturbed.
I have never disliked a book as much as I disliked this one. It was extremely factual and hard to get through. The storyline kept hiding under the main character’s continuous monologue (which lost me at quite a few points). The story itself could have been quite interesting had it not been for the style it was written in. I have no idea how I managed to push through it and I’m still wondering what was the point of it all. I know that this is the first book in a trilogy; in fact, I am quite curious to read the next couple books just to see what happens to the main character. But considering how tedious it was to read this, I think I’m just going to give it a pass.
Happy reading ~
