Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey

I was looking for some more fantasy novels to read. Although I love mystery and psychological thrillers, I also enjoy a good old land-of-magic style of book. I vaguely recalled reading novels by this author so I decided to give this one a go.

Talia lives in a village where women are simply breeders. Men marry multiple wives and expect complete subservience. When Talia is told that she is to marry, she runs away. That is when she is found by a Companion, a magical intelligent horse that is almost always associated with a Herald. But for some reason, this Companion isn’t. Determined to help, Talia decides to ride with the Companion all the way to the capital. What she finds waiting for her will change her life forever.

In all honesty, I did not really enjoy this novel. It was quite jumpy and I felt like it had less focus on magic and more focus on Talia making friends. It almost felt like it was Anne of Green Gables (but not as good). It could have been really good if the author had just stuck to one story plot instead of going everywhere. I don’t think I’m going to read the rest of this series but if someone does, do let me know if it gets better!

Happy reading ~
