Hero by Belinda Crawford – Hero Rebellion #1

This novel was given as an advanced copy by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Science fiction is one of those genres where I either hate it or love it. There is no in-between. That’s why I can be quite picky when it comes to reading books that fall into this category. Well, here is my review:

Centuries ago, humans colonised Jørn, a lonely planet on the far side of the galaxy, only to discover that the planet was slowly killing them through a native spore that travelled through air. While livestock and crops were saved using genetic engineering, humans had to travel into the sky in order to be safe from the spore’s reach.
In this new world, Hero Regan is regarded as special for her ability to hear voices in her head that are inaudible to everyone else. She is surrounded by guards and tutors, and her only companion is Fink, a 600 kg genetically-engineered ruc-pard who shares everything with her – including her desire for freedom. Their chance arrives when Hero is sent to school in Cumulus City. But with this chance comes a master plan, one that puts Hero right in the middle. Now Hero must choose whether she will help or foil this plan in order to attain the freedom she so desperately seeks.

Unfortunately, this book is going to have to go into my “did-not-finish” pile. I just could not get into the story. I didn’t like that the author assumed that I already knew so much about this world; I constantly felt like there was much that I didn’t know about the way things were. As I was reading, I found myself losing sight of the main plot and wondering where exactly the author was going with this whole thing. All in all, it was just too confusing for me to push through so I think I’m going to just let this one go. If you have read this novel, please do let me know if it is worth giving another chance!

Happy reading ~
