Black Widow by Christopher Brookmyre

I was given an advanced copy of the novel from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have been soooo excited to write this review, especially because I really enjoyed reading this novel! I did not know beforehand that this novel is part of a series that star a reported called Jack Parlabane. However, that did not in any way impact my experience reading this novel! I’ve waited this long to write about it because this novel gets released in November and I wanted to time my review closer to that date. I couldn’t hold back any longer, though, so here it is:

Diana Jager is a successful and skilled surgeon who has been a fierce champion for equal rights for women in medicine. She is known for her fiery streak and her criticism of the medical system and its blatant sexism through her blog. However, not everyone likes to read her opinions, and she soon finds herself being attacked by the public when her personal details are released on the Internet as revenge. With her social life in tatters, Diana resigns herself to a life alone, with only her work for comfort. Then she meets Peter. He is a kind, and gentle man who doesn’t give a whit about her past – exactly the kind of person Diana has been waiting for. Within six months of dating each other, they get married. In another six months, Peter is found dead in a road accident – a tragic end to this modern fairy-tale romance. However, Peter’s sister, Lucy, is not satisfied with the way her brother’s case was dismissed as an accident, and hires reporter Jack Parlabane to uncover the truth behind the woman the media has dubbed “the Black Widow”.  No one could have been prepared for what Jack is about to uncover…

This book was absolutely fantastic. Diana Jager is a very unique character, and I absolutely love the way that she has been depicted. She breaks all stereotypes of how female leads should be and is extremely tough and secretive. Throughout the novel, I was constantly wondering what the truth behind the mystery was, and I really wasn’t able to guess until the very end! Even though I read this book a few months ago, it is still very fresh in my mind and has definitely left an impact on me. This is by far one of the best thriller novels I have read this year and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fast-paced murder mystery with unique characters. I guarantee you will be on the edge of your seat!

Happy reading ~
